Southern California Edison Causes Power Outage in Corona

Southern California Edison has done it again—the power is out for customers in the Southland. Thankfully, it’s not as many as in November when the winds destroyed power lines, or when San Diego Gas and Electric had that major shutdown in September, but over 1,400 customers are without power in Corona.

The power went out just before 3 a.m. this morning, and SCE is blaming it on equipment problems, not the wind—although it is blowing today in the Inland Empire. Or should we call it the “Windland Empire”? The Santa Anas are being very generous during this holiday season, and although all of us are appreciating the sunny, warm weather, windstorms are becoming a little frequent.

And we’re starting to get a little worried, too. We know that there are people out there with wind-damaged roofs. Even if you think that the damage isn’t too bad, or there’s just a few shingles missing, you need to get it fixed NOW. It’s all sunshine and happy times right now, but January, February and March are the rainiest months in Southern California. And if these winds continue, that means there will be wind-driven rain, which can get into roofs that aren’t damaged. It’s seriously persistent rain.

There are eight more days in December, which means January is right around the corner. Don’t wait until the rain starts to find out if your roof has been compromised by the windstorms. Remember, this is our fourth windstorm in two months, and the gusts will get over 70 mph today! If you live in the Inland Empire cities of Rancho Cucamonga, Fontana, Upland, Pomona, Ontario, Riverside, Chino Hills, Murietta and Moreno Valley, you were right in the path of the “inside sliders”, the winds that drove through the mountain corridor. That means that your home or business was hit by the strongest winds, and checking your roof now for damage will be much less expensive than water damage later, and mold remediation after that.
