California is no stranger to natural disasters. You’ll hear about their constant wild fires, shakey earthquakes, pushy winds, and overwhelming mudslides and floods. Whether you’re new to California or a local, these tips can help you better prepare for the next natural disaster. Keep in mind that for every disaster, you should always have an emergency kit ready at hand.
Wildfires
Some fires can be sparked from either the heat of California or man. You should always plan ahead with your family and designate an area in which everyone can meet up. Teaching yourself and your loved ones how to use a fire extinguisher can also be the difference in a life and death situation. Clear your home’s surrounding of any combustible objects and keep a ladder that can reach your roof nearby. If the fire has already begun to near your home, make sure to turn off any fuel near or within your home and prepare to be evacuated.
Earthquakes
Since California is notoriously known as earthquake county, make sure to note these useful and life-saving tips! Before any earthquake strikes, make sure to prepare your home with sturdy furniture in which you can take cover. Remaining calm can potentially make a huge difference if an earthquake strikes. If you’re prone to stressing out easily during these situations, make sure to conduct practice drills so that you are better prepared. Make sure to practice dropping, covering, and holding your neck and head with your hands.
Wind
In many cases, wind is fairly harmless; however, you shouldn’t neglect the potential hazards it can cause. Strong winds may push trees and/or power lines down which you should avoid and call the appropriate authorities to notify of the danger. You should also inspect your roof, windows, and doors periodically so as to keep the contents within your home safe. Checking these can exponentially decrease both the potential risk they pose as well as saving you a fortune on future repairs.
Floods and Mudslides
Similarly to being prepared for a wildfire, keeping a ladder that can REACH your roof would be beneficial in case rescuers need to be able to see you during both a flood and/or mudslide. Also make sure to keep your phone fully charged in case you need to make any emergency contact with authorities. You should remain vigilant during heavy rainfall since it’s the most common and ideal time for floods and mudslides to occur.
