This past week has been difficult for homeowners along the Mississippi River in Tennessee, Mississippi and Arkansas as the swollen river and its tributaries have crested at record highs, turning neighborhoods into swamplands. Record rainfalls in the central US have resulted in devastation downriver and many are waiting to learn the fate of their homes damaged by the flooding. In Memphis, for example, more than 1,000 homes are currently underwater and officials estimate it will still be quite some time before the waters recede and the extent of the damage can be assessed. The total cost of the Mississippi flood damage is expected to approach several billion dollars, much of which will be attributed to incidents involving homes, commercial properties and agriculture. Some property owners will be able to finance reconstruction and flood damage restoration efforts with private insurance plans or coverage from the National Flood Insurance Program, but those uninsured will be left to bear the costs of the flooding themselves. Unfortunately, the devastation appears far from over as officials in Louisiana are just now beginning to see the start of severe flooding in their state. Experts are predicting that as many as 25,000 residents of small towns will be permanently displaced from their homes and that residents in New Orleans will be facing their peak waters around May 23rd.
