Luckily, Hurricane Irene wasn’t all that the media hyped it up to be, but that doesn’t mean that residents of the Eastern Seaboard weren’t affected by the storm. The death toll is up to 24 and thousands are in shelters, plus over 4 million people are without power until further notice.
Vermont is suffering from the worst flooding they’ve seen in over a century—although the rain was only as bad as Tropical Storm Doria which hit on the same days in 1971, exactly 40 years ago, the only storm to have caused worse flooding was in 1903, which was simply called the Great Flood.
Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin said that although they prepared for the worst, the state has “extraordinary infrastructure damage,” with hundreds of road closures, communities cut off and the loss of at least three historic bridges. New Jersey also had flooding that will go down in history, although again, Irene did not sustain the damage that the media had predicted.
Although California doesn’t get hit by hurricanes, we do have bad winter storms that flood our cities and towns, and cause damage to property, both residential and commercial. So what did we learn from this? Not to listen to media hype? Not at all—even though the media might have gotten a little hysterical, they probably saved lives by ensuring that those in the areas predicted to be the worst hit evacuated and prepared for the hurricane’s devastation.
But what about those with businesses? How can you prepare to be out of business for an indeterminate amount of time? Not only while the storm rages, but during the time it takes to repair any damage?
