Some people are calling them “late summer storms”, but we call them disasters that take residents and business owners by surprise, and can cause quite a bit of damage.
The storms are dumping a lot of rain in a short amount of time across the Southland, exceeding 2 inches per hour in some areas, including Los Angeles, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties. Saturday morning brought bizarre weather to some parts of the Southland, while other parts remained untouched by anything more serious than an overcast sky.
In our hometown of Corona, lightning caused “numerous” fires, said 911 dispatchers, who sent the firefighters out to aid homeowners and business owners in need.
Other areas were hit by thunder, rain, high winds and hail. Dana Point reported quarter-sized hailstones, as did Woodland Hills, after thunderstorms passed through those two cities by late morning. The National Weather Service warned that the storm would be accompanied by frequent lightning, which—as Corona found out—could be quite dangerous. [Read more…]
