Don't let this happen to you. Get your roof fixed now before the rain starts.
Well, this “Indian Winter” we’ve had has sure been nice, but we’re sorry to be the ones to announce that it will be coming to an end. By the weekend, temperatures will start dropping and the clouds will increase. And clouds, if everyone remembers from their grade-school science class, bring rain.
There are very few people whose homes went unscathed by the November and December windstorms. Just because your roof didn’t blow off doesn’t mean there wasn’t damage, and we’d hate for you to find out the hard way—after it rains.
You may think: “It’s just water. How much could it really hurt?” And we’re here to tell you that when water combines with the walls, roof and construction materials in your residential or commercial property, it can be devastating to the inhabitants.
Water damage in a building, home or business, is the leading cause of microbial contamination, which can pose serious health risks to those exposed to it. If not handled quickly and with the proper expertise, bacteria and fungus will colonize and grow rapidly. And the quality of water that causes the damage, combined with the length of time between damage and remediation, determines the type and extent of health problems that can occur.
There are three different kinds of water quality:
- Category 1, or clean water, is the least contaminated. This category includes rainwater or broken water pipes and usually presents very little risk. However, as this water comes into contact with the ground and structures, it can quickly degrade into Category 2.
- Category 2, or gray water, contains considerable amounts of chemicals and contaminants and poses a
greater health risk. Examples of gray water include water that has escaped from a washing machine or an aquarium. A gray water contamination can turn into Category 3 within a short period of time and when exposed to temperature changes. - Category 3, or black water, is heavily contaminated and potentially contains sewage and other contaminants including pesticides, toxic chemicals and industrial waste. Health risks increase greatly when water damage includes black water contamination.
As you can see, a Category 1 doesn’t seem so bad at first look, but do realize that once that rainwater comes into contact with either the ground (i.e. flooding during a storm) or your property (i.e. a leak in your roof), it will most likely be a Category 2. Just like that. There are a number of fungal contaminants that are commonly found in water-damaged properties that like to colonize in damp materials, especially if they are consistently damp. Many of these fungi are considered potential toxin-producers. Mycotoxins from these molds are what can cause the extreme health problems.
Why have a professional clean and restore your property? You may think that, as one who has done a lot of handyman work around your home, you could just tear out those damaged drywalls and reinstall them. But if the remediation is done incorrectly, high levels of bacterium and fungal spores will be released into the air and cause respiratory problems such as allergies, allergic disease and toxic disease. If you have infants, elderly relatives or people with immune disorders in your home, they are at greater risk of being affected by these airborne contaminants.
