As we mentioned last week, the weather is prime for fires: dry, hot and breezy. We have also encouraged our readers to check their smoke alarms, as that is the best way to survive a house fire.

Three people this morning were very lucky, as was a dog. A fire blazed through the second floor of their home in the 1100 block of East Broadway in Anaheim. According to Anaheim Fire Marshall Jeff Lutz, one of the upstairs bedrooms was “engulfed” by flames at 6 a.m. this morning, and the residents, two women and a man, were outside the home safely when firefighters arrived. A dog had also managed to escape unharmed.

Thanks to the help of about 27 firefighters, the fire was under control within about 20 minutes. The cause of the fire remains unknown, as does the estimated amount of damage caused to the home, although from our experience, it will be considerable.

The important thing is this: one of the residents said he did not hear the smoke alarm go off. Who doesn’t hear a smoke alarm when it goes off? They are so loud that deaf people hear them. And that means that their smoke alarm was not working. They were lucky to escape the fire with their lives.

Please make sure that your smoke alarms are working by checking them at least twice a year. We suggest checking them when you change your clocks back, but check them any time of the year—just make sure that they are working!
